Summary

Luke has never been to school. He's never had a birthday party, or gone to a friend's house for an overnight. In fact, Luke has never had a friend.

Luke is one of the shadow children, a third child forbidden by the Population Police. He's lived his entire life in hiding, and now, with a new housing development replacing the woods next to his family's farm, he is no longer even allowed to go outside.

Then, one day Luke sees a girl's face in the window of a house where he knows two other children already live. Finally, he's met a shadow child like himself. Jen is willing to risk everything to come out of the shadows -- does Luke dare to become involved in her dangerous plan? Can he afford not to?

A Good Book... But Good Things Have Weaknesses

Rating: Score = 3 Score = 3 Score = 3 Score = 3 Score = 3

Before I begin, I will say that this WAS a good book.

The basic plot is that Luke Garner lives in a world where he, along with a few other children, are unwelcomed. It takes place in a future where humans are sucking the life out of the planet, and it is too overpopulated. This leads to a ban of all children born after the second.

That is the VERY basic plot. Read to find out the rest.

Upsides -

The plot is fresh and new.

Interesting and believeable characters.

Good "what if" picture.

Downsides -

Some plot elements overused.

Second half seems rushed.

First few chapters are rather depressing.

There you have it. The best and worst of Among the Hidden. Will I read the next book in the series? Oh yes. Let's pray that the next installment was tweaked for the better.

A Great Start to a Magnificent Series

Awesome! More than awesome! There's no word for this book. This is one of the best books I've ever read, and I've read about 300 books. No wonder it got an award. Luke Gardener, an illegal third child, is the main character of this book. If you want to get more information, read the book!

Short, sweet, to the point

I liked this book. It was an extremely quick and easy read with an interesting plot and characters.

I probably won't read the rest in the series beacuse although the subject matter is interesting, I'm 21 and feel these books are just too young for me.

B+

Let me say first that I am always pleased to see kids doing reviews here--unless they're doing them as an assignment for class. Teachers, please don't make your students write reviews! If they didn't like the book, they're doing the writer a disservice by clicking the one star button then venting about how "boring" the book was.

Let me add to that: I do not recommend this series for kids under twelve. People die. I hate when that happens. Let's try to offer our pre-teens something less traumatizing. Please.

Having said all that, let me just add that I enjoyed this first offering in the Shadow Children series. I would have loved it when I was 12. At 54, I'm a bit more conscious of the writing style. Jen is a bit over the top in her Jen-ness, and Luke is definitely a fearful passive kid. We get that, Ms. Haddix; please don't hit us over the head with it. Beyond that, it certainly is a page turner and will interest most 6h, 7th and 8th grade avid readers enough to launch them on their journey of reading the entire series. We hope.

Great Book

Book in great condition. Shipping was fast. My 9year old loved the book and the lesson behind the story to be learned
