From father to daughter

I loved "Archie" comics as a kid, reading them in the '60s and early '70s, as well as reprints of early comics from the '50s. When I look at them today my mind quickly wanders. Although I actually remember some stories and situations with fondness I'm simply too old to be entertained by them now.

However my daughter is the perfect age (12) for "Archie" and loves not only the new ones, but the old ones too. I had some of my old comics to give her and she's been enjoying these reprint series as well. The art may change, Riverdale may be more culturally diverse, and Big Ethel may merely be Ethel now, but if my daughter is any indication, her children and her grandchildren will be enjoying these same comics in the years to come.

Oh, wow, man...!!

It's another wholesome dose of all-American Archiemania... This is another excellent entry in the decade-based "Archie Americana" series, reprinting a big batch of classic stories featuring Mr. Andrews and his pals in Riverdale. In terms of content, this book is one of the most steeped in popular cultural references -- social protests, pet rocks, disco, CB radios, Star Wars, Pong and numerous other 'Seventies milestones are fondly remembered in a gauzy cartoon haze. It's a groovy look back, packed with references that may puzzle young'uns, but will delight those who lived through it all. The downside is that in the rush to document all the fads of the era, the book barely has time to feature any of the typical "Archie" themes, such as the Betty-Archie-Veronica love triangle, Jughead's food mania or Big Moose's jealous protection of Midge, his girlfriend.

Hopefully, following the lead of the '40s and '50s editions, they'll find room for a Volume Two of this decade, and can select a few non-topical tales, pick out the best stories they can find and just linger on the artwork and storytelling, which were still pretty good at the time. In the meantime, "Archie" fans will delight in this book, and will be eager and hungry for more. (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain book reviews)

Great stuff...!!

This is one of the strongest entries in this "Archie" reprint series... I do wish they had more stories from the early part of the decade -- the Kennedy-era artwork may be my favorite of all the Archie styles -- but once you get into all the Beatles lampoons and hippie references, the historical hilarity takes over, and artwork (though fine) takes second place to the plot. These old stories make a great cultural history lesson (although they often fall on the conservative side of the Generation Gap...) It's fun stuff, and arguably the creative peak of the whole series.

I'd love to see more collections like this... The fantasy version would be a series of year-by-year best-of reprints: I'd get the ones for 1961, '62 and '63 in a flash. A set of vintage "Jughead" stories might be nice, too... But I'd also settle for a "Sixties Stories, Volume 2" That'd be groovy too, daddy-o! (ReadThatAgain book reviews)

Archie is great in any decade!

I loved the Archie comics as a kid and still enjoy them today. I was so glad to see how it began and he's basically the same kid today!

Really great!

Again, I loved this one as well. They are right in saying that it is a bit difference; the focus that is. It really concentrates on the fashion and electronics; everchanging as it was. Add it to the collection and read them all.
