Summaries and Customer Reviews provided by Amazon

Summary

Every year, spurred on by the dry season on the African plains in Kenya and Tanzania, close to two million wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles make the epic journey from their breeding grounds in the southern Serengeti to greener, wetter grass on the northern plains during what is known as the Great Migration.

As the dry season turns to wet, they travel full circle back south. Year after year, governed by the seasons as they evolve from wet to dry and back again, this cycle repeats itself. Great travelers that they are, these migrants encounter dangerous predators and the kaleidoscope of wildlife on the African savannah along the way, from lions and leopards to elephants, dik-diks, and dung beetles.

African Odyssey: 365 Days follows the movements of these massive herds as they migrate across the Serengeti, with each spread representing a day in the life of the herds. Dramatic scenes are played out on every page, chronicling life and death in one of the most fascinating and complex ecosystems in the world. With its extraordinary photographs and text, African Odyssey takes you on an unforgettable journey.

Trekking With Wildebeests

Rating: Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4

Five years ago, brothers Anup and Manoj Shah produced "The Circle of Life," a superlative collection of African wildlife photography; so when I read about their follow-up book, "African Odyssey," I was eager to get it.

"African Odyssey" is a photographic record of the Great Migration of wildebeests and zebras through the Serengeti ecosystem of Tanzania and Kenya. Other books have been published on this subject, but this one is a year-long, day-by-day account of the photographers' sightings as they follow the wandering herds and observe the many predators and environmental perils with which they come in contact -- 365 eventful days, 365 full-page photos, 365 meaty captions.

Though "African Odyssey" lacks the elegant design of "The Circle of Life," and though many of its striking images cry out for a larger page than this compact volume affords, it's a recommended addition to the bookshelf of anyone interested in Africa and its remarkable wildlife.

For its size (compact), there are 365 pages of amazing full-color photos of African wildlife in this thick little book. Great reference book. Great for those in love with Africa and African wildlife! Compact and sturdy. Wonderful and often exciting Nature photography!

BEAUTIFUL PHOTOS AND A GREAT READ

One stunning photo for each and every day of the year, following the migration of the wildebeest on their annual circuit in search of lush grass. A lovely book well worth the money.
