Summaries and Customer Reviews provided by Amazon
SummaryThis book represents several decades of data collection, research, conversations with different airframe specialists, plus the author's more than twenty years' experience in airframe structural design. From structural standpoint, the book is intended to be used as a tool to help achieve structural integrity according to government regulations, specifications, criteria, etc., for designing commercial or military transports, military fighters, as well as general aviation aircraft. It can be considered as a troubleshooting guide for airline structural maintenance and repair engineers or as a supplementary handbook in teaching aircraft structural design in college. This book is divided into a total of sixteen chapter and emphasizes itemized write-ups, tables, graphs and illustrations to lead directly to points of interest. The data can be used for designing and sizing airframe structures and, wherever needed, example calculations are presented for clarification. |

Average Rating:
A decent reference book on Airframe Structures
I think Mr. Niu's textbook provides a good discussion on the basic and fundamental knowledge required by the Structures engineer. It should be particularly helpful for the engineer new to the field. I did come across a few errors, but I have not noticed the myriad of errata that was rumoured. The text does not contain the depth of discussion on Structures/stress analysis that I wanted, like the industry-standard Bruhn, however the figures, charts, examples, and pictures are much clearer, and henceforth put things into perspective much better. This text, combined with Bruhn, gives me the reference material I need to perform my stress analysis tasks.
Niu, Airframe Structural Design, 2nd Ed. - Review
Micahael Niu has filled a void that has existed since E.F. Bruhn last published his book thirty years ago. I recommend all of Niu's books, and this one is no exception. It is full of design details and recommendations that are difficult if not impossible to obtain without extensive experience in many companies. It is a book to be studied, however, not simply glanced at. The practicing designer should do well to periodically re-visit this book before undertaking a new assignment.
Unlike his other books on stress analysis, this is a design reference only, with few examples of calculations that provide further insight into the reasons for the design recommendations provided. It is thus a complementary book, and a good addition to any aircraft reference library.
This book creates a vacuum
Used this book in structures I. Might be a fair reference....students.......don't bother with this one.
Good book for aerospace engineers
This book is really well done, it has everything you ever
wanted to know about sizing an airplane... it has helped
me in my Airframe Structure class + project.
One thing though: beware that there are many errors
(typos and calculations) in the book.
Fire the proof editor!
The first edition has so many errors, typo and otherwise, that I believe the author and his publishers rushed without proper proofreading just to get it printed and out the door so they could start selling it. The content is very much the same as Niu's other book, Airframe Structural Design, except the chapter arrangements. Nevertheless, the worked-out problems are very helpful and practical and make this book valuable.
