Summary:
Every once in a great while an artist emerges who does more than simply reflect the social trends of the time. These artists are able to transcend established thinking and help us redefine ourselves and our world. Today, a growing number of art critics, philosophers and spiritual seekers believe they have found that vision in the art of Alex Grey. Alex's paintings take the viewer on a graphic, visionary journey through the physical, metaphysical and spiritual anatomy of the self. Grey's portrayals of human beings blend scientific exactitude with depictions of universal life energy, leading us on the soul's journey from material world encasement to recovery of our divinely illuminated core. The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, a sanctuary showcasing Mr. Grey's unique contemporary sacred art, opened in New York City in 2004. The works in this exhibit dramatically reveal the miracle of life's evolutionary complexity, the unity of human experience across all racial, class and gender divides, and the astonishing vistas of possibility inherent in human consciousness. Alex Grey is the author of Transfigurations, Sacred Mirrors and The Mission of Art. His work has graced the album covers of TOOL, Nirvana and the Beastie Boys, and has been exhibited around the world.

More and more I am beginning to understand the ineffectiveness of words. As much as I love to write and read and study the deeper "truths" that many a master have offered, I realize that they are just words...symbols...the Course in Miracles would say that "Words are but symbols twice removed..." In Truth, Truth cannot be written about or spoken about but can only be experienced.

I think that's why I appreciate the art of Alex Grey so much. And yes, art, too, is a symbol - but somehow, for me, at least, it touches something within me...a remembrance...a knowing...a feeling that there really is no ceiling between our minds and the Infinite Heavens...and even though his art has borders and is definitely finite, it takes me to places and spaces within myself that transcend the ordinary.

Maybe that's why I love his calendars so much. I get a whole month of Holy Inspiration. I can gaze at his art just before going into a meditation or a prayer session and I can have a deeper inner communion with the Infinite and I understand more or less that in this world of form, everything can be used to have a deeper, more transcendent experience.

What is ironic about this very spiritual calendar is that it suggest that time is real and I can look at it and say, well, of course time is real...but is it? Meister Eckhart, a German mystic and Catholic priest said in the 14nth century:

"There exists only the present instant... a Now which always and without end is itself new. There is no yesterday nor any tomorrow, but only Now, as it was a thousand years ago and as it will be a thousand years hence."

Alex Grey's art throws me deep into the present where I can feel that Presence and I can know and feel that this Divine Force that is within everything that is, is always making Itself new in me as well as in everything that is.

Make your New Year a new beginning. Don't just read spiritual and metaphysical books - bleed them dry - cry and weep and yet awake from your sleep and know that it's all just a dream but when you awaken while in the dream, everything becomes just a little more radiant...a little more glorious...a little more True in the deepest sense of the word.

I am thankful that Alex Grey's art has come into my life and has rattled my soul cage into a deeper awareness that there is always something trying to move through us and when we get out of Its way, magic...Real Magic begins to happen.

Have a Magical New Year, everyone...

Peace & Blessings,
john, 'the Light Coach'

Great book for any artist to have in their library. Very spiritual for those whose interests are broad in relation to life's meanings. Cheerio
