Summary

Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne’s first encounter with Clare Fergusson was in an emergency room on a freezing December night. A newborn had been left on the steps of the town’s Episcopal church, where Clare just happened to be its new priest. That night in the hospital was the beginning of an attraction so fierce, so forbidden, that both Russ and Clare risked compromising all of their ethics and beliefs…

In the small community of Millers Kill, gossip spreads like wildfire. So when Russ’s wife kicks him out of the house, he figures it’s nobody’s business but his own—until a neighbor stops by and finds Mrs. Van Alstyne’s butchered corpse on the kitchen floor. To the townspeople and church folk, the murder is proof that the whispered rumors about the police chief and the priest were true. But nothing is as it seems in Millers Kill, where betrayal twists old friendships—and evil waits inside quaint white clapboard farmhouses…

I SHALL NOT WANT BY JULIA SPENCER FLEMING

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

I just read an excerpt of from the first page of "I Shall Not Want", by
Julia Spencer Fleming.

All of her books are spell binders, however, this new one takes the suspense up a notch. You can feel the hairs raise on the back of your neck from the deputy sheriff's fear as she faces off against her attacker.
Our favorite characters are back with some new ones added that have the depth we expect from her. Clear your calendars for June 10th when this book becomes available because once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down until the last page.

Probably the best in the series, and I've read them all

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

When I read the first mystery in the series several years ago, I commented that although it was flawed in several ways, the author had great potential as a writer. She seems to have finally come into her own with this addition to the series.

One of my problems was that the author did not seem to be taking sufficiently seriously how compromising the situation was for the main character, Episcopal priest Clare Ferguson. Clare is way too interested in a married man and not very discreet about it. This would quickly cause repercussions for most clergy, particularly when they are young and new (both to ordained ministry and to this particular church).

In this book, that problem is front and center and fully acknowledged. Much of the book involves the relationship between Clare and Russ, who is Chief of Police in the snowy upstate New York town of Millers Kill. The emotions and reactions are well described (perhaps a bit too much, given how much I was interested in what happened next in the mystery).

Russ and his wife Linda have separated as a result of his admitting his love for Clare (still not taken to a physical plane). A friend of Linda's drops by to see her and finds her murdered, face mutilated. Russ is the obvious suspect (look to the husband first), and if not him, then Clare (she wanted him free to marry her, right?) The internal affairs department for some state police agency sends a detective to take over the investigation, and the investigator makes no effort to conceal that she strongly suspects Russ.

Clare is trying to deal with her own situation, made more complicated by the arrival of unwanted help, but she ends up getting drawn into the murder investigation.

This book was very well written and quite engaging. I have to admit that I strongly suspected the killer early on, but then I read a lot of mysteries and ought to be pretty good at it by now. I highly recommend this book.

But -- again, I have some concerns about how careful the author is in getting the facts right. She seems to now understand the Episcopal church and all it's special language (although I would not say that Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, lovely as it is, is consistently low in pitch and easy to sing), but I did find myself thinking that a lawyer-author ought to know that evidence taken as a the result of an illegal search is not admissable in court.

Ordered the book as I have all Julia
Spencer Fleming's books. Read it again she did not disappoint. I am waiting for the next in her endeavors due out in June! I have enjoyed everything she has written. A clerk at a bookstore recommended her and so do I.

Another great series

The latest in the Clare and Russ series, these books are written to draw you into the lives of the characters.
I listened to the audio versions and Suzanne Toren does an excellant job of making the characters come alive.
I hope this series someday becomes a movie or TV mini series.
