Summary

It ranks right up there with public speaking. Nearly all of us fear it. And yet it’s critical to our success. Asking for money. It makes even the stout-hearted quiver.

But now comes a book, Asking: A 59-Minute Guide to Everything Board Members, Staff and Volunteers Must Know to Secure the Gift. And short of a medical elixir, it’s the next best thing for emboldening you, your board members and volunteers to ask with skill, finesse … and powerful results.

Jerold Panas, who as a staff person, board member and volunteer has secured gifts ranging from $50 to $50 million, understands the art of asking perhaps better than anyone in America.

He has harnessed all of his knowledge and experience and produced what many are already calling a landmark book.

What Asking convincingly shows — and one reason staff will applaud the book and board members will devour it — is that it doesn’t take stellar communication skills to be an effective asker. Nearly everyone, regardless of their persuasive ability, can become an effective fundraiser if they follow Jerold Panas’ step-by-step guidelines.

Great book on the topic

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

Read the book based on a friend's recommendation. It actually took about an hour to read. I have now passed it on to others on my committee raising funds for a church building project. Excellent.

Powerful

In a world were information is vital but time is tight, Asking by Jerold Panas gets straight to the point. As a new development director the infomation in this book will help me be successful. You can read the book in one sitting, but will return time and time again just to reinforce what you learned or to share it with other volunteers or staff. Thanks for taking the fear out of the heart of what we do.

Asking

Loved it! Short but sweet; a great first look at making the big ask.

Practical information

I liked the book because it eliminated the mystery in how to structure a one-on-one interaction with donors when you ask for a gift. The book is a quick read also. What I didn't like is that he recommended being really assertive about getting an appointment or getting a firm answer from a donor. I don't like to push donors that hard because I would not want that type of pressure from one of the nonprofits I support.

A Quick Lesson

Excellent book for Foundation Board members who have little or no sales experience. It is a lesson in one's dedication to a worthwhile cause than helps one ask for the order.
