Fascinating art, predictable story

Rating: Score = 3 Score = 3 Score = 3 Score = 3 Score = 3

Probably worth stating that I'm an 'old-school' X-men fan that really just picked this book up out of curiosity to see what Wolvie is up to these days. Though some people have griped about the art, I found it to be fantastic and a surprise from what I expected. Kind of reminded me a bit of Mike Mignola's work on Hellboy. The story was another matter, as seeing every chapter open with the repeating phrase that Logan is the best at what he does, then watching him get 'killed' several times was very discouraging to a long-time fan of the character. I feel as if the writer doesn't take into account Logan's history or character beyond a few banal phrases and shallow concepts. And the plot point where Logan is reduced to a skeleton and then regenerates left me scratching my head; this completely took me out of the story. A few pages later, Logan appears to slip on a suit of Iron Man's armor to travel underwater, and Namor doesn't seen to realize than Tony Stark is suddenly a foot shorter...after that, I was really just flipping the pages for the sake of the art, which was outstanding.

I liked the art...

Well, here goes old loner Wolverine, back for another solo vendetta against a major criminal conspiracy. We know the plot, and its good. Marc Guggenheim writes a fine Wolverine, equally portraying the violent crazy Wolverine and the reflective former samurai Logan. The only problem a lot of people seem to bring up is the art. I personally don't think it appears to be for kids. I feel it fits perfectly with the crazy, over-the-top story here. I mean, he fights guys in Crusader armor, sleeps with a blue chick from Atlantis, and COMPLETELY regrows from a skeleton. This story is crazy, just like it's character, and a gritty, dark art style wouldn't have made it better, it would have made it gross.

Wolverine Chooses His Side

Rating: Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4

While many of the "Civil War" tie-ins are only loosely connected to Marvel's big crossover event, "Wolverine" breaks the mold. If you read any of the tie-in books, read this one!

Wolverine tracks down the superhuman responsible for the Stamford tragedy, only to find that Nitro is just the tip of the iceberg. As the mystery deepens, Wolverine attempts to take down a war profiteering corporation the only way he knows how: With his claws. While the story veers off course somewhat, it's still essential reading for "Civil War" fans.

Artwork is terrible.

Rating: Score = 1 Score = 1 Score = 1 Score = 1 Score = 1

I'm not sure why wolverine looks so cartoony and unrealistic, knowing it's a comic book and it's just art, but the drawing is just inconsistent and overly exaggerating. I would rather look at art by others, but I guess Wolverine with a thick neck and muscles bulging like tank cannons are the vogue these days.

The story is kinda bland and the art is overly exaggerating. I didn't like it and I couldn't recommend this to casual comic book readers. Marvel puts out lots more good books and I'd recommend avoiding this even though it's tied in to Civil War.

Best Civil War tie-in

Rating: Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5

Wolverine is still one of the best characters in the Marvel Universe - so when civil war errupts, you know wolvie's going to do what he does best. This tie-in has him tracking down Nitro, who set off the chain of events leading to registration. While on the trail Wolverine gets into some pretty nasty situations - LIKE GETTING BURNED ALIVE!!

The art work is great - for some reason I really like Ramos' style. And the book is pretty bloody - great fights with plenty of action. The only thing is, that it doesn't feel like a Civil War tie-in. Other than the connection to Nitro, this collection stands on its own pretty well. In fact, you only see one character from the main story (Iron Man), and Logan never gets near any of the action between Stark and Cap. America.

Still, the collection is great - just don't look for back plot to the Civil War.
