Summary:

"Pancakes are a luxury, like smoking marijuana or having sex. That’s why I came up with the names Ho Cakes and Slutty Cakes. These are extra decadent, but in a way, every pancake is a Ho Cake.” Thus speaks Kenny Shopsin, legendary (and legendarily eccentric, ill-tempered, and lovable) chef and owner of the Greenwich Village restaurant (and institution), Shopsin’s, which has been in existence since 1971.

Kenny has finally put together his 900-plus-item menu and his unique philosophy—imagine Elizabeth David crossed with Richard Pryor—to create Eat Me, the most profound and profane cookbook you’ll ever read. His rants—on everything from how the customer is not always right to the art of griddling; from how to run a small, ethical, and humane business to how we all should learn to cook in a Goodnight Moon world where everything you need is already in your own home and head—will leave you stunned or laughing or hungry. Or all of the above.

With more than 120 recipes including such perfect comfort foods as High School Hot Turkey Sandwiches, Cuban Bean Polenta Melt, and Cornmeal-Fried Green Tomatoes with Comeback Sauce, plus the best soups, egg dishes, and hamburgers you’ve ever eaten, Eat Me is White Trash Cooking for the twenty-first century, as unforgettable and mind-boggling as its author.

Even better than I thought it would be

I think the book has a lot of good "diner recipes" and I definitely like the story part of the book more than the actual recipes. You can tell that Kenny ,even with his tough exterior, is nice man who loves his family and cooking.
I am 19 and going to culinary school in a few months... I'm just trying to read as much as I possibly can about food, and this was Not a waste of time!

Excellent & entertaining !

You don't have to be a foodie or even like to cook to love this book. Kenny Shopsin's philosophy on cooking, running a restaurant and people in general is unlike anything I've ever experienced. Brilliant, hysterical, and some good recipies to boot. Buy it, enjoy it, share it.

This was a great read, and has workable, enjoyable recipes as well. That's pretty much all I want from a cookbook.

Superbly entertaining read

Those of you who expect this to be just another cookbook will be disappointed. I think that to truly understand this book, you have to watch "I Like Killing Flies" to get the humor, wit and fun. Otherwise, you'll end up thinking that Kenny Shopsin's just a rude, crude person who happens to know people in the publishing industry. Fans of " I Like Killing Flies" will get a better understanding of Kenny Shopsin's philosophy and viewpoint. After reading the book, I think that in the end, Kenny wants to make the world a better place through food in his own unique, foul-mouthed way.

Written in almost a stream-of-consciousness fashion, the book is very easy to read. It's a lot of fun to read about how some of dishes on Shopsin's extensive menu originated. Some of the tips in the book are very useful, eg. how to cook various styles of eggs properly. Most of all, I enjoy being knowing more about Kenny Shopsin and his family. I just hope that I'm lucky enough to be allowed in his restaurant if I happen to be in the area :)

Great read and a great cookbook

I've already cooked several recipes and it's a great cookbook.....just reading it though is a pleasue, since it's almost half memoir. Google the New Yorker article that is used as an introduction and read that....if you liked that, you like the book.
