Summaries and Customer Reviews are supplied by Amazon.com Millions of shoppers save money buying groceries in bulk — trays of boneless chicken breasts, pairs of flank steaks, and flats of ripe tomatoes. But savings can quickly become losses if those bulk quantities spoil in the refrigerator or lie forgotten — unlabeled and unrecognizable under layers of ice crystals — in the back of the freezer.
Kati Neville and Lindsay Tkacsik have built businesses teaching home cooks how to take advantage of bulk savings by shopping wisely; converting food purchases into delicious, healthful family dinners; and labeling and storing the meals for easy access on busy days. They share all their best recipes and organizational wisdom in Fix, Freeze, Feast, a cookbook every price-conscious shopper will love, and warehouse club members shouldn't be without. With their help, home cooks will have freezers stocked with easy-to-prepare entrées, ready to be defrosted and cooked for weeknight family dinners. Imagine the comfort of knowing a homecooked meal is always available.
Each recipe includes instructions for dividing, preparing, and storing the raw ingredients, and a second set of simple directions for thawing, cooking, and enjoying the food. Designed for the way people cook today, Fix, Freeze, Feast meals are lighter and fresher than traditional bulk-cooking recipes, with a focus on simple stews and stir-fries, quick grilled or broiled main courses, and popular ethnic meals such as Beef Fajitas and Cashew Chicken Stir-fry.
Add to the entrées ready-to-bake cookie doughs, warming soups and side dishes, fruit smoothies, and portable kids' snacks, and those warehouse club shopping trips begin to look more valuable than ever. This is a system that saves time, saves money, and saves families from the empty calories of takeout food. Make room in the freezer for next week's dinner! New concept for weeknight meals | Customer Rating: | | The meals we've tried have been very well received. Only wish there had been some pictures of the finished dishes. | Great! | Customer Rating: | | I will endorse this book. I have a 2 sided list of recipes that I would like to try. If you are a smaller family such as ours (2 adults, 2 kids) then it is easy to scale the recipes down just to try them out. I used the honey chicken thighs recipe recently when my MIL was over from Scotland. She asked me for the recipe and I provided it(I plan to buy her a copy of this book for a gift). I have balsamic/raspberry chicken breasts in the freezer now, they will be pan cooked after thawing. The jerk pork T loin was great, butterflying it was the way to go. Also utilized a 2 steak marinades for a cookout, everyone loved them. Some recipes are easy to tailor according to your own inspiration, buy the book. Thanks to the author for her hard work! | This one is top-notch | Customer Rating: | I got this out of the library on an inter-library loan. Since my library doesn't have it in stock, I may have to buy it! Important: 1) The recipes are easy to make. Yes, you still have to cut up your meat and vegetables, but nothing is complicated. 2) Everything is (or sounds) flavorful. Even the "strange" recipes will probably be kid-friendly once they take a taste. 3) The food is made with mostly easy-to-find ingredients, and I live in rural America. The author talks about buying at a warehouse. I don't have a warehouse store near me, but this is still workable. So far, I haven't found a recipe that does not freeze and reheat well. You're not locked in to an 8-or-10 hour cooking session. You can easily fix one recipe or two a week, and have a freezer full of variety without even trying. But another reader suggested forming a supper club with friends, and I have to say that is an outstanding idea. This rates right up there with my heretofore favorite Don't Panic -- Dinner's in the Freezer. This is a good one, folks. Really. NOTE: I couldn't wait. I bought this book within hours after originally writing this review. It came bundled with my other library fave, Don't Panic: Dinner's In the Freezer. | Like those Supper Super Places | Customer Rating: | | My wife did one of those Supper Supper events with some friends last month and it really made my life easy (I do all the cooking.) It was just great pulling out a meal to defrost the night before and not having to hassle with thinking about what to cook the next day. So, after finishing off that set of meals I decided to get a couple books using this prep and freezer method. This book is definitely the best of the bunch and really has some great marinades and the technique is similar to the prep and freeze places you find around town, but saves you about 40-50% since you can do it yourself and buying the ingredients isn't too bad since I already had a fully stocked kitchen that only needed a few small things for the marinades and picked up some meats and a bulk thing of chopped garlic from Costco. All in all, it took me about 2 hours to prepare 6 recipes where I doubled each one, making 12 meals for the coming month. I find this approach very cost effective and time effective as I still do a lot of cooked meals without the freezer method, but this mixes it up and gives me some recipes I probably would not have done using a day to day method instead of the bulk prep approach. A couple standouts from the book are Blackjack Steak (molasses, balsamic vinegar marinated flank steak) and a basil-vinaigrette pork chop recipe. There are several chicken recipes too that I have yet to try that I made - including a great smelling asian chicken recipe I'll make this week. | It's a life saver! | Customer Rating: | | This cookbook has transformed the way I cook for my family. I have moved from "What am I going to fix for dinner tonight...? - big sigh" to enjoying the cooking process (never thought that could happen) and having delicious meals on hand... no sighing involved! I have never been much of a cook, but these recipes are super easy to follow and offer a variety of flavors that have greatly expanded our meal selections. The authors have successfully tackled the challenge of creating a great selection of healthy recipes without using expensive, hard-to-find ingredients. I have the freedom to prepare one recipe (3 to 4 meals) at a time, or have a marathon cooking day and stock my freezer with 20 to 30 meals. The amazing time saver is the fact that you put as much effort (and mess) into preparing several meals as you would have put into preparing just one... and reap the benefits on the other nights. Having meals on hand has also allowed me to help others through difficult times by providing meals for them, which is very rewarding. This cookbook makes a great gift - I have passed it on to countless friends, family, brides and new moms. It's a life saver! |
