Summary:
One house. Forty strangers. Add vodka and stir . . .
Every summer, scores of Manhattan twentysomethings take part in an annual ritual with a camp-like culture distinctly its own: the Hamptons sharehouse. When Rachel and her two best friends buy their shares for twenty times each of their bank balances, they're imagining days filled with lazy suntanning and classy clambakes and nights spent rubbing shoulders with the Olsen twins and other celebrities. But once they arrive at 1088 Montauk Highway on Memorial Day weekend, they find that the reality falls a bit short. What looks like any other million-dollar mansion--on the outside--plays host to drunken escapades, explicit nudity, hot tub hookups, hideous hangovers, and juvenile mischief on the inside. As housemates jockey for limited bathroom time and beer pong mania takes over the house, Rachel finds herself wondering if it's possible to find true love--or even just survive the summer--in The Hamptons.

A very amusing fine take on Long Island Jewish culture

As a 40 yr old male, I rarely if ever read any type of "chick lit" books. However, I happened to see this book on a shelf at my local bookstore and it interested me being that I was raised on Long Island. The book, "How the other half Hamptons" by first time author Jasmin Rosemberg, is a simple, easy to read coming of age story set mainly in a share house in the Hamptons.Growing up in Long Island, and having garduated from The Univerity of Maryland/College Park, the 3 main character(Allison, Rachel, and Jamie) were very realistic and familiar to me.The most realistic and very cool character imo, was Jamie. She is the quintessential "JAP" (Jewish American Princess)from Long Island. I am certain there are many women like Jaimie and her friends in towns on Long Island such as, Plainview,Great Neck, Dix Hills, and Merrick/Bellmore.What I find refreshing about this book is that the author writes about what can be known as "JAPPY" culture. Many Jews and even non Jews especially from the NY/NJ metro area know what I am talking about.Ask anyone that has attended colleges such as, Maryland,Wisconsin,SUNY Albany, and the characters that Rosemberg portrays will seem larger than life. The character of Jamie is hilarious(especially funny, is the scene where her mother visits their house share), and if I picture her a really fashionable, funky, and real cool. The men in the book are also realistic. Although Rosember does not focus mainly on the male characters, they are portrayed humurously, as the male equivalent of the JAP. I belive this book would be a great, groundbreaking movie. In much the same way as movies such as "Boyz n the Hood", and "Hustle and Flow", portrayed inner city African American culture, this potential film would portray a slice of suburban/urban Jewish American culture. Thsi would be innovative imo because Hollywood has never really portrayed Long Island "Jappy culture" In the same way that many films have realistically portrayed hip hop culture, Rosemberg's book realistically portrays "Jappy" culture. I give credit for the author in writing a good funny book that exemplifies a slice of Jewish New York culture that will enlighten and entertain both Jews and non Jews as well.A very fine first effort by Jasmin Rosemberg

This book was a real disappointment. It was boring and repetitive, I could not even finish it. Each chapter involves getting drunk on Friday, "anonymous hooking up" and midnight barfing. No plot, no destination.

GREAT BOOK AND CAN LEARN A LOT TOO

How the Other Half Hamptons is an entertaining novel about a group of 3 young women off to have fun in the Hamptons in a share-house over one summer. As you follow the story through either one of their eyes, you come to learn about each character as you share their experiences with them. How the "other half" Hamptons refers to those who visit the Hamptons by living in these fraternity-style share houses, instead of those who prefer (and can afford) the glitzy and glamorous lifestyle that is supposed to accompany vacationing in the Hamptons.

What I liked most about the book was going through the experiences through the eyes of the 3 main characters. Through their shared and individual experiences, they learn a lot about themselves and one another and I found that to be rewarding.

There are a lot of funny parts in the book, where she refers to some of the young women as either "clones" or "zeros." Clones referring to women who are identically dressed and who act identically also. Zeros referring to women who don't finish a salad at dinner and hence are size 0.

I'm glad this book was written while the author is in her 20s because a lot of this text can only be written by someone in his 20s. Myself, being 30, will not be able to remember in 10 years all the slight nuances that the author interjects, which really makes the reader believe that these characters are indeed in their early 20s.

The book is definitely "Sex and the City" like, from a younger women point of view. The book can definitely be adapted into a movie, and I'd like to see future adventures of Jamie, Allison, and Rachel. Not so much vacationing in the Hamptons, but perhaps simply living their lives as twentysomethings in New York.

There are also some tips for guys in the book as well...

All in all an excellent and endearing book and entertaining read.

An entertaining read...

When most people think of the Hamptons, they think of the affluent. How The Other Half Hamptons gives readers a completely different view of life. Rachel, Jamie, and Alison head to the Hamptons for the summer. Forty unique personalities sharing a ten bedroom house makes for endless parties and endless fun. How The Other Half Hamptons had me laughing out loud (that's a little embarrassing in a doctor's office). Jasmin Rosemberg has a talent for writing with great humor and expression. Women in their twenties and thirties will love How The Other Half Hamptons.

You will feel like you were there

Have you ever wondered what the Hamptons were all about? Especially for the "normal" people who don't have millions of dollars and flit from society party to society party. If so this book is for you.

It gives a great description of what it is like to be a 20-something who just wants to get the experience of the Hamptons in a way that they can afford. It means mistakes, immature people, cattiness and letting yourself go in ways that you may have never done before.

This book gives great incite into what it would be to just be there - part of the action. Does it make married old me want to catch a plane and be part of a "share house" - not at all. But I was glad to be able to tag along for the ride in this story.
