My old copy of Joy of Cooking is almost 40 years old...I thought it would be nice to update it by purchasing the newest edition. It is wonderful. I always give Joy to new brides or those starting out housekeeping for the first time. If one could have only one cookbook, Joy is the one to have!

I have my own copy of this book, but the one I got through Amazon was for a friend in Australia. I am very pleased with your service as the book was delivered 3 weeks before you said it would...thank you and I will continue to use amazon.com.

Cook up some classics!

Originally a self-published book in 1931, and no less than nine revisions later, this thick volume of recipes (it's got to be at least 3 inches thick) is a great addition to anyone's cook book library.

But wait! This book is not merely just a collection of recipes- although with 4000 classic recipes and an additional 500 new ones, that would make it worth buying alone. No, this cook book stands heads and shoulders above the rest because its what I call a "teaching" cook book. It contains recipes for just about every dish or food category you can think of which are arranged in various sections throughout the book. Then, at the beginning of each chapter, there is a kind of introduction which goes into detail about that category. For example, the section on grains starts off with an almost encyclopedic explanation of the types of grains, their anatomy, how to combine them, and so on.

A handy, informative cook book with plenty of choices, there is sure to be something for everyone and even healthy eaters will find a great section on what makes up a healthy diet, how many calories you need, etc. Also recommend The Sixty-Second Motivator for readers who need more motivation to eat healthier and have trouble changing their diet habits.

My first copy of this book lasted me about 10 years. I really am glad to get the new one. This book covers all the basics, plus so much more. It is a must for any kitchen.

What can I say?

Alot... but I will try to be brief. I have been in food service for 27 years. This is the first cookbook I ever checked out of a library, the first cookbook I ever bought (3 times) and it is the ONLY cookbook I give to aspiring cooks, chefs and other people who share my passion for cooking. There is simply no other book that I would consider a staple of daily kitchen reference than the Joy of Cooking. When I first read this book back in 1986, it opened my eyes and understanding in a way no other cookbook had. My first copy was so dog eared, smeared with gook and pages falling out that I simply HAD to replace it. So I retired my original copy, got another.... and lost it in a divorce. Hence comes copy #3.

It makes a great gift to any young person... I even gave a copy to my 12 year old son and wrote in the cover. It's a book that is meant to be shared, used and loved. If you haven't ever picked up a copy, do so today... you won't regret it.
