Maureen Garth's popular meditations for children were born out of the author's desire to help her three–year–old daughter sleep soundly. Developing 'the gentle art of going within', her delightful stories helped her child – and many others around the world – to feel secure and to sleep peacefully. In Moonbeam, Garth invites her readers to accompany her on journeys into an imaginative world of animals, people and places. She shows parents how to use these imaginings with their children, helping them deal with their anxieties, develop their concentration and enhance their creativity. Wonderful Bedtime Book | Customer Rating: | I came upon this book in an effort to find a tool to help ease my 7 year old son at bedtime. He was having fears of death and not being able to fall asleep (all he could imagine were people he loved dying). So I got this book and he loves it. He asks for me to "read it again tomorrow night." The beauty of this book is that it is simple and uses the child's imagination in a beautiful way. My 10 year old son also stops reading at bedtime to close his eyes and listen to the meditations. My 10 year old said it helps him clear his mind of everything that happened during the day.
I think most people who have reviewed this book have explained very nicely why they loved it. There may be some aspects of the book that relate to Christianity (a story of an Easter Egg Hunt), but on the whole the book is for children and their imaginations. All the imagery in this book is child related (Disneyland, The White House, Star Fairies). I gave the book only 4 stars because the opening of the book does not relate sometimes to the story you read. For example, you are in your garden in daytime and the next line says it's dark and the stars are out. Other than that... it's wonderful. | sweet dreams... | Customer Rating: | | I have had Maureen Garth's meditation books for 14 years - since my daughter was 4 years old. These peaceful and vivid visualizations have guided my spirited daughter from wake to sleep night and after night, for years. During the past few years, she's asked for them less and less. After all, she's grown beyond needing Mommy to put her to bed. But, recently, during a patch of unwanted nightmares, I came across these treasures again, and offered to "read a meditation" to her before she went to sleep. The calm, peaceful sound of her heavy breathing followed me out of the room. I do not think anyone could ever outgrow the lovely images given to us in this book. | Not sure of the audience for the stories... | Customer Rating: | | Beautifully written short visualizations but we kind of miss out on where the meditation comes into play. I have a four and ten year old and the book doesn't really apply to either age group. I was hoping for a little more guidance in teaching my children to meditate. I think this book is for kids who have the basics of meditation down and would just like another avenue for their practice. | Peaceful and delightful | Customer Rating: | | I bought this book a few weeks ago for my very anxious 7 year old daughter. I read her one of the meditations last night and was delighted with it. We had watched a movie that scared her a little and this helped put her in a better frame of mind to go to sleep. She told me this morning she liked it and it was relaxing. I plan on using this often with her and my other two children. I enjoyed it as much as she did! | A Great Childhood Memory | Customer Rating: | My parents read this book to me when I was a kid, and I'm astonished how much it affected my life. It helped spur my imagination, it allowed me to think of stories before bedtime, instilled in me a love of nature, and allowed me to meditate freely today! I'm now in my first year of college and seeing this book again reminds me how GOOD it felt to hear the stories and visualize them. I can still remember plenty of imagery, like the Worry Tree, and the smiling flowers...And I think they visit the Easter Bunny at some point?
I also want to point out that I'm not Christian, and my family isn't Christian, which was a concern I think I saw in another person's review. The guardian angel part meant a lot to me as a kid, because I didn't subscribe to any real belief system, but it was nice to feel like someone was watching over me. Just my own opinion though!
I dunno. Anyways, as someone who grew up with Moonbeams, I highly recommend this as a great time to spend with your children before bed. I just love all the fond memories I have of it, truly! And because it was so great I figured I'd offer another perspective to the reviews: that of an enchanted child. |
