Semi-valuable & overpriced | Customer Rating: | I got this book as part of my required course materials for a class I'm taking. First thing that hit me was the price. $67 for a book on the Internet? Isn't the market already saturated with books on the Internet? Oh, wait... this is "New Perspectives on the Internet," it offers something the others don't. Right off the bat, I found the information only semi-valuable and much of it was innaccurate or just plain incorrect. Just one example, in the section titled "World Wide Web," Schneider incorrectly states that "In 1993, a group of students led by Marc Andreessen at the University of Illinois wrote Mosaic, the first GUI program that could read HTML and use HTML documents' hyperlinks to navigate from page to page on computers anywhere on the Internet." I guess the author didn't do much research. Otherwise, he would have found out about Nexus (WorldWideWeb) and VoilaWWW. Oh well, they did not experience widespread adoption and so why mention them? This is just just once example of the many problems and inaccuracies I found in this book.
Don't get me wrong, I rated this book 3 out of 5 because, for the most part, it is well-written. It would give someone like my mom or my grandmother a basic understanding of the Internet. However, no one should pay $67 for it, and no one should rely on its information as 100% accurate. |
