Nicky Epstein’s blockbuster Edge titles have sold more than 125,000 copies; she’s a needlework star whose every book is eagerly anticipated and snatched up. Now Nicky’s giving devoted readers her most important and wide-ranging collection of patterns yet: a worldwide tour of knitting traditions and techniques, including colorwork, cables, lace, intarsia, and more. She explains the origins and traditional uses of each one, and then goes on to reinvigorate and recombine all these beloved styles in her inimitable way. The result: more than 40 all-new, innovative designs collected in an attractively designed book with a handy ribbon marker. There’s a Celtic Pullover with braided twisted rib strips; a Snowflake Tunic from the Far North; a Felted Tyrolean Capelet with appliqué, cord, and balls; a Spanish Rose Pullover with lace accents; a colorful Peruvian skirt; and an oversized, zipped Navajo Blanket Jacket. Colorful maps and historical photos make this collection a visual treat, as well as an invaluable tool for knitters seeking new inspiration. Top of the World Knitting | Customer Rating: | Nicky Epstein's Knitting on Top of the World: The Global Guide to Traditions, Techniques and Design Blue Duck/ I had high expectations for this book. I felt that it contained many modern interpretations of the traditions, techniques and designs from around the world. This book gives modern interpretations of items like the jacket on the cover. The main obstacle for me using this book is that I felt the patterns to be impractical. If you like up-to-date couture, you will probably love this book. | fabulous and far-out fashion design, but not much on tradition | Customer Rating: | Knitting On Top Of The World, while subtitled "The Global Guide to Traditions, Techniques and Design", is really a fashion designer's vision. This should surprise no one who is a fan of Nicky Epstein's work. The book may be inspired by knitting traditions and styles from around the world, but you won't find any projects that hearken back to times gone by or that are knit using traditional techniques. Nicky is just not that kind of gal. Her designs are fashion-forward, over the top, and sometimes outlandish.
The book does, however, include sections that discuss the history of knitting and techniques that are used in each region of the world. The information is brief, but even though I have been reading about international knitting news and history for years, there were a few bits that were new to me. The introduction is clear to say that this is not a scholarly work, so don't be disappointed when you don't find encyclopedic information. I also found a few discrepancies where the same item was discussed with different dates given. But for a general overview of world knitting, this is a wonderful book. Plus, you will not find a more drop-dead gorgeous knitting book anywhere. And although many of Nicky's designs are a bit too fashionista for me (and a couple are completely bizarro -- how on earth did the publisher allow that wrap with the two tams looking like giant pasties get into the book?), there are a few projects that I definitely would like to make some day. | Inspirational | Customer Rating: | | I am rather eclectic and european in my thinking so the designs in this new book inspire me. I have a few favorites in this book. I am a big fan of the victorian period and it so happens the tiered lace coat looks very much like the over-jackets worn in that period. I also was impressed by the piecework poncho scattered with knitted leaves and flowers. I love doing small motif pieces and I can see beyond this one design to link other motifs like hearts and diamonds, pearls and beads. I like one of a kind pieces and I find these wonderful. The fact that many countries like japan (feather and fan scarf) as well as the Shibori scarf are represented here in a small way help broaden my interest of other styles in other countries. | Too Chic for this Chick | Customer Rating: | Chic or outlandish? I'm not sure, but I'm very sure half of these are not the patterns for me. Not only are half of the patterns so high fashion as to be more art than wearable (by the average person), they are also the kind of garments that you have to be a model to wear well. A plus size gal like myself would look ridiculous in a good number of these patterns. Some of them have proportions that are wild and very avante-garde, some are just plain curious, and a few are very lovely. I really wish I'd flipped through it before buying.
As an art book or coffee table conversation starter the book is full of things to discover and talk about. But for someone not ready to jump off the edge of the map into such adventurous realms... I'm going to have to destash or return the book. However, if you're the kind of knitter who loves to be inspired by flamboyant creativity, you may just love this book. | Nicky has done it again! | Customer Rating: | | This book incorporates both a history and background for knitting inspiration. I plan to make several of the garments. Most of the instructions are clear and accurate although the garments are really geared for experienced knitters. If you are a beginner, I suggest you use this book for the WOW! factor. |
