A hot read by Sarah McCarty | Customer Rating: | Sarah McCarty's anthology, Running Wild is a fun, sexy and fascinating look into the Carmichael Pack. Donovan and Kelon are the Pack Protectors and Wyatt is the future Alpha. None of them are looking for mates, and in fact, have pretty much lost hope for finding them. You know what they say, as soon as you stop looking, that's when it finds you. Unfortunately, their mates come into these werewolves' lives at the worst possible moment. For Donovan and Kelon are sworn to defend their Pack and to uphold Pack Law, which denies the existence of human mates and Wyatt is being tested as the future Alpha and any sign of weakness could mean both his and his mate's death. All three werewolves refuse to give in to tradition however and vow to follow their mates into a new future.
Donovan's story starts with him tracking down Wyatt. He needs to get the future Alpha to come home and take over the Pack for his dying father. At a bar he meets Lisa Delaney just as she beats the snot of the guy who hurt her younger sister. Coming to her aid, his wolf recognizes her as his mate. Unsure of how to proceed, he only plans to see her safely home, until he presses her against his truck and starts down a path he can't turn back from. Lisa is a pretty stubborn woman. She accepts Donovan as a werewolf but for right now, can't bear to see him shift. She's been taking care of her sister for so long and when Donovan shows up, she's only too happy to lean on him and use him to help her forget her troubles. Donovan is a pretty dominant wolf and in finding his mate, demands her submission. Apparently the female wolves are submissive to the males so that the male's natural dominance doesn't rear it's ugly head and hurt them. Lisa is human though and finds too much fun in teasing and taunting him. Their bedroom scenes were hot and spicy without being over the top. Donovan was aggressive without being bullying, but when push came to shove, he was a big softy around her. He can't even discipline her in accordance with proper female Pack behavior, even though Lisa wouldn't mind.
Kelon's story starts when he joins his twin brother and his new human mate. Donovan asks for his help in protecting his mate and her sister from the guys Lisa bashed in that bar. Kelon is a pretty lonely wolf who hasn't found his mate yet, so he comes down to help his brother kick butt, never expecting to fall for Lisa's sister, Robin. Unfortunately, Robin is dying from her failing kidney transplant. She doesn't have much time left and so when Kelon steps into her life, she grabs onto her chance to finally know passion. The danger surrounding her and Lisa seems a little more personal and marked than the wounded pride of the guys from the bar. Thinking it better to split the women up, Kelon takes Robin into the mountains for protection. While in their comfy hidey hole, Robin tells Kelon that she's dying, and that she wants a short term affair. He's just found his mate and he doesn't care that she doesn't have a lot of time left. He's just grateful for the time they do have, so he doesn't waste time in marking her and bonding with her. He's determined that whenever she goes, he's going to follow. Kelon and Lisa were a good, well rounded couple. She was accepting of her fate and Kelon didn't waste time arguing with the pros and cons of mating with a human. Both of them got right down to business. Kelon is also a pretty dominant wolf, and even though Robin is fragile and soft, she's no sickly female who shrinks at the sight of an aggressive male. When she disobeys one of Kelon's orders and almost gets herself killed, she demands that he punish her. Her noisy discipline brings about an outraged Lisa, but when she gets a glimpse of her sisters 'discipline' she can only wonder why her mate hasn't 'disciplined' her yet.
Wyatt's story starts with Lisa and Robin's older sister Heather coming for a visit. She stubbornly refuses to believe that her younger sister's boyfriends are werewolves. She denies this all the way until she gets to the Carmichael compound, where Donovan and Kelon head to see how Wyatt is adjusting as the future Alpha. He isn't doing so good. He's constantly being challenged by the men he grew up with and he refuses to kill any of them. He's always been at odds with his father and the Pack tradition and the last thing he needs is to catch the scent of his mate in Heather Delaney. He knows the Pack will never accept her, but he can't stop himself from marking her as his. Heather has always tried to be in control of her life and now having Wyatt take charge is both a welcomed relief and a marked annoyance. Being the future Alpha and dominant to his bones, Wyatt has his hands full in getting Heather to submit to him. When he faces off yet another challenger however, Heather steps in and protects him as no female wolf would do. She faces down the Pack and Wyatt realizes he can never leave her side. He sets out for a new future, and with his mate and closest friends behind him, Wyatt determines new traditions and a safe haven for his Pack. | CONSISTANTLY WONDERFUL!!!! | Customer Rating: | | FIRST OFF,I LIKE PARANORMALS AND CONTEMPORARIES SO WHEN A FRIEND WANTED ME TO TRY SARAH MCCARTY HISTORICALS I WASN'T ENTHUSIATIC.BUT I DID AND AM I GRATEFUL I DID!RUNNING WILD IS FUN,HOT AND ROMANTIC TRILOGY WITH GREAT HAPPILY EVER AFTER,WHICH IS ONE REASON I READ.LOL.LOVE THE FANTASY!THIS IS A FANTASTIC WEREWOLF PARANORMAL BY A GIFTED WRITER WHO INCLUDES ROMANCE WITH HER EROTICA,A RARE BIRD INDEED.......WARNING:THIS IS A KEEPER!ITS GOING TO DISAPPEAR! | Three stories about werewolf heroes and their human mates | Customer Rating: | Running Wild tells the story of three werewolf heroes and their human mates, who happen to be sisters. The story takes place in Haven, Montana, a small town where the women are opening a bed and breakfast, and the men have come to bring one of their own back to Pack.
Donovan is a Protector, sworn to uphold and enforce the laws of his race. One of the biggest rules in Pack is that werewolves do not mate with humans--to do so would dilute the purity of the race's bloodlines. But when Donovan scents Lisa Delaney, he knows that she's his mate and he has to have her, Pack or no. Lisa meets Donovan when she's in the middle of a fight with the man who disgraced her younger sister, Robin. She realizes she's in over her head too late, and Donovan steps in to back her up. Their attraction is immediate, the chemistry sizzles off the page, and this was a great introductory story to this book.
Kelon is also a Protector, and Donovan's twin brother. He's a bit more rustic--he prefers to live in the woods than among the humans--and definitely more rough around the edges than his brother. When Donovan calls him to help find the men who hurt Robin, he shows up unshaven and unkempt. He immediately regrets this when he meets Robin and scents that she's his true mate. Robin Delaney has had a hard life. She's endured two kidney transplants, and her new one is failing. She's also never had a real date. When she hears that Kelon is in Haven because Lisa and Donovan want to set him up with her, Robin is appalled and embarrassed. But when Kelon proves to her that he's interested in her regardless of their interfering siblings, things heat up quickly.
Wyatt is the sheriff in Haven, and the ascending Alpha of his Pack. However, he wants no part of the old ways and wants his Pack to be more progressive. But when he learns his father is dying, Wyatt returns to Pack to prepare to assume the position of Alpha. When he doesn't answer calls for a few days, Donovan and Kelon decide to go back to the Pack and find out what's happened to him--only they make the mistake of bringing their mates and the oldest Delaney sister, Heather. And of course Heather happens to be Wyatt's mate, which makes things strained in the presence of a Pack that shuns the idea of humans mating with their kind.
Running Wild was enjoyable, but the plot development was lacking. Primarily in that the first concern outlined in the story was that werewolves and humans not mate. Donovan and Kelon are Protectors, bound to enforce the laws of their race, and it seemed a little easy that they just threw those laws out the window when they met their human mates. There was no resolution or reason given, just she's my mate so forget about Pack. Still, Sarah McCarty knows how to write good erotica, so the stories were sizzling hot even if there was some sloppy storytelling in there. If you can look past the inherent hypocrisy in this story, and just want an entertaining read, you'll like this book. But if things like weak plotting and unresolved issues bother you, you should try one of her other stories like Caine's Reckoning (Hell's Eight). | Running Wild | Customer Rating: | "Donovan"
Lisa Delaney is defending her sister's honor against the man who attacked her when Donovan McGowan steps in to help. Donovan is a Protector for his pack. It is forbidden for a werewolf to mate with a human but once Donovan catches Lisa's scent, he knows she is the one woman made for him. Lisa faces Donovan the same way she faces anyone who gets in her way: head on.
Lisa is cool, independent, and strong. She's the perfect match for Donovan. Donovan is very intense and all alpha male. He commands respect and always gets it. Lisa and Donovan steam up almost every page of "Donovan" as the first story of these three werewolves unfolds.
"Kelon"
Kelon McGowan's twin brother Donovan has asked him to help protect Robin from the man who brutalized her. Kelon prefers his solidarity. He is a Protector like his brother. For Donovan's sake, Kelon reluctantly agrees to help. When he sets his eyes on Robin he is instantly drawn to the fragile woman. Robin wants nothing more than to spend a night in the arms of a strong and virile man like Kelon, but she's sick and running out of time. Kelon wants forever with Robin and he'll make the ultimate sacrifice to get it.
"Kelon" is heartbreaking and heartwarming. It's moving and erotic and very kinky. I love the innocence and fragility of Robin and I love how Kelon's demeanor instantly transforms from reluctant protector to enraptured lover when he sees her for the first time. "Kelon" is a wonderfully written story packed with emotion.
"Wyatt"
Heather Delaney is the oldest of the three Delany sisters. She's the responsible one, the dependable one, the one who takes care of everything. Just once Heather wants to be cared for. When she sees her sisters settled down with their "mates" she can't help but feel a bit jealous. Wyatt Carmichael is the McGowan's cousin. He is also their pack leader. When Heather meets Wyatt she gets the proof that werewolves really do exist and that she just might be the mate to one. But the pack has turned against their leader and if they get their way, Wyatt will be dead before he can claim his mate.
Wyatt and Heather are so alike. They are compatible on many levels. Wyatt's is incredibly sexy and Heather deserves what she gets from Wyatt. I wouldn't mind getting some of that too! "Wyatt" is very exciting. It brings the final pieces of this trio of stories together and creates a fantastic ending to Running Wild.
Running Wild is erotic, loving, and heartwarming. "Donovan" is full of intensity, I was moved to tears at times in "Kelon", and I cheered for Wyatt and Heather in "Wyatt". I love the way Running Wild is written. There are three distinctive parts in a continuing story. Each one leads to the next until its dramatic and exciting conclusion. With Running Wild you get three for the price of one: three sexy werewolves, three strong women, and three erotic and exciting stories!
Nannette reviewed for Joyfully Reviewed | Fun, but a bit shallow | Customer Rating: | Normally this sort of story of triple-couplings would be divided into three books rather than three stories in one book. On the one hand, this is a refreshing change. On the other hand, it did cause a couple aspects of the stories to get short shrift. The aspects of danger to Lisa and Robin are handled in a somewhat shallow manner---the danger to Lisa is resolved somewhat anticlimactically, and there isn't enough buildup to the nature of the danger in Robin and Kelon's story. Then Wyatt and Heather, who don't put in much of an appearance until the third story, feel somewhat cheated in terms of character depth (they're very interesting characters, but we don't get to explore them quite enough).
I do also have to ask---what is it with the sheer volume of paranormal books that have some concept of a 'true' mate? I mean yeah, it's romantic to think that there's one person just for you, but it isn't necessary for a great love story, and as a plot device it's getting to be rather over-used.
That's the extent of my complaints. I really enjoyed this book, and found it quite engrossing. The characters are fun and sexy, and each is distinct from the others even though they share traits in common. The exploration of this author's take on werewolf society is enjoyable, but takes a back seat to the characters (I mean that in a good way).
The romantic and erotic aspects of Sarah McCarty's Running Wild are very hot. As is often the case with werewolf stories, there's an element of dominance & submission, but the female characters are also quite strong and independent (it's a tough line to ride, but I think McCarty does it quite well). The sex scenes (usual adult material warning: very explicit sex and plenty of it!) sizzle.
Despite my above negative notes, I think Running Wild is a fantastic book. The characters are fun; the relationships are very enjoyable to explore; and the milieu definitely sucks you in. |
