Summaries and Customer Reviews are supplied by Amazon.com Lynn Johnston's For Better or For Worse is the world's most popular family strip in which characters evolve through age and experience, rather than remaining frozen in time. Readers appreciate the daily doings of the Patterson family, which often mirror their own.·Senior's Discount: A For Better or For Worse Collection follows John and Elly as retirement looms, Grandpa Jim celebrates his 85th birthday and suffers a stroke, Mike and Deanna adjust to the demands of parenthood, Elizabeth accepts a teaching position that brings her back home, and April strains for more and more independence. ·Simultaneous to the publication of this collection, Johnston makes an unprecedented move within the newspaper cartooning community—developing a new format by using former plot lines as a jumping-off point for new ones. For Better or For Worse has been syndicated since 1979 and has been named Best Syndicated Comic Strip. The strip boasts a lively Web presence at www.fborfw.com Lynn Johnston | Customer Rating: | | I have been reading her comic strip since the beginning and have to have all the collections, Would recommend this addition. | Lynn Johnston - Genius | Customer Rating: | Lynn Johnston is briliant. Somehow she knows exactly what will occur in my life before it actually happens. Oh, the names are changed, and the minor details, but the fundamentals are the same.
It is obvious that she writes "For Better or For Worse" from her own experiences, as they are so like mine, and, I believe, like those of many others. In fact, as she is a little ahead of me, she has often helped me get through situations by putting them in (often hilarious, sometimes poignant) perspective.
Her entire series of comic strips is humourous, touching, and oh, so real. My only complaint is that she can't produce as fast as I can read. If it were possible, I would give her more than five stars, for this, and all her other FBOrFW collections. | Teluria | Customer Rating: | | Lynn writes from the heart which reaches all of us as well as makes us laugh. Growing up with her family, we identify with the adult characters as well as with her cartoon children, Michael, Elizabeth and April. Humorous, entertaining and touching, Lynn keeps me waiting in eager anticipation for her next book. | The Best in the Business | Customer Rating: | For over 25 years, Lynn Johnston has done something few others have attempted. She has let her characters age and kept us involved with their lives in a humorous and loving manner. Like Doonesbury, her strip is a saga of people, events, and emotions and throughout Lynn has proven she is a comic strip artist with a conscience.
I recently started re-reading the entire series, doing one book per week or so. It has been excellent bedtime material and helps remind me that some more hope and humor helps us cope with our daily lives.
Johnston never strays from reality in portraying what is "for better or for worse." Fortunately for the readers, she also never strays from reason or doing what's right. Canada has a national treasure and her name is Lynn Johnston. And she has created the best Canadian ambassadors for goodwill ever to grace the comics pages: the Patterson family, their friends, and their pets.
If you've never read this series, buy them all. You won't be dissatisfied with a single book. If you already know this series, then you know everything I've written is true and even better than I can write about it. And, you probably are already at the stage in life where you qualify for a "Seniors' Discount." | The decline of a great strip | Customer Rating: | This collection shows how far the quality (and the likeability)of the FBoFW has fallen. We see the oldest child basically crawl back into the womb, ignore his children and wife and accept handouts from his parents (while villifying his in-laws). The older daughter leaves a job, a dedicated boyfriend who has completely re-ordered his life for her, and a community of friends simply because her old boyfriend (with whom she has been having an emotional affair) has finally gotten rid of his wife. The younger daughter has demonstrated that she will take any behavior from her boyfriend, just to get attention.
Ms. Johnston should have retired this strip years ago. |
