Summary:

From years of bloody conflict to probationary Bandidos membership, this memoir recalls the life and times of an outlaw biker from Oklahoma and his quest to add to the Bandidos Nation. The Rock Machine, founded by Salvatore Cazzetta, had every intention of standing up against the Hells Angels. Heavily outnumbered, the Rock Machine appealed to the worldwide Bandidos Motorcycle Club, who rivaled the Hells Angels in terms of membership and strength. In January 2000, the Rock Machine ceased to exist and became a probationary Bandidos chapter. Winterhalder was assigned this transition and, at 46 years of age, was considered an elder statesman in the outlaw biker world. He was the founder and former president of the Oklahoma Bandidos and a confirmed biker for 25 years. Furthermore, he possessed a keen knowledge of jurisprudence and was an astute businessman who owned and operated a multi-million dollar construction management company. Starting with the arrest and unsuccessful deportation proceedings, and leading to more intrigue, assassinations, and double-crosses, Winterhalder found his life spiraling further and further out of control.

It's ok.

The book was ok. Definately well-written, but the author seems to toot his own horn about how great he thinks he is too much.
This would probably have been more interesting if I lived in Canada, but since I don't (never have and most likely never will) I think I had trouble identifying with the Canadian biker scene. Don't get me wrong, there were interesting tidbits and references to things I remember hearing in the news, but the repeated references to newspaper articles and such got a bit tedious.
On another note, the author complains that he was delt a low blow by his status being changed from 'out in good standings' to 'out in bad standings' after he was out, but then at the end of the book posts a list of club locations and number of people in each charter, which is a big MC no-no. So what was that?...the author taking a last jab at his former club because he's pissed at them for shunning him, or an example of behavior that pissed off his fromer club and got him labeled "out in bad standings"? I don't know and can't venture a guess, but it makes me wonder.

the other side

Having read a number of books dealing with HA in Canada it was interesting to see another side of the RM vs HA.

If you've read The Road to Hell: How the Biker Gangs are Conquering Canada you will know the story Ed tells. This is a book that comes from one of the losers in the battle for Canada's riches. According to Ed, the Bandidos tried to be a part of the quest for a Charter in Canada, but lost their bid to the Hell's Angels. The truth of the matter is; The Rock Machine split between the two clubs.
Ed, or somebody , did a good job of writing this book. I found it easy to read

Same bull from this guy

If anyone have read "Out in bad standings" its suprising this guy made another book. This book tells the exactly the same story, wich was already boring and lack any value.
Absolutely a no buy.

Re-done but well done!

The Assimilation is an interesting kind of read. If you are a tried and true aficionado of Biker Books, this book is a must for you. It is well written, very insightful and portrays a step in the life and times of Edward Winterhalder from the point where he has become the Second in Charge of The Bandidos MC and the events which drive the merger from The Rock Machine MC to become The Bandidos Canada.

The only problem with the book is that there appears to be some redundancy with his initial book.

Having said this, if you have not read his first attempt at book publishing, The Assimilation is a wonderful read. It will be completely new information and its written with style and is a gritty insight into the inner workings of the Bandidos Nation.

It is actually much more than the title suggests. The book gives an insight into Connecticut Ed. He is one of the truly interesting and remarkable examples of a character who is destined to succeed in this world. His persona and character oozes with charisma and one immediately understands he is a force to be reckoned with in his publishing ambitions. Whilst he has 'doubled up' on some material from his first book, The Assimilation is the mature product with insight and characters developed to the point where this fact became quite irrelevant to this reader. Indeed, I found the read of the Assimilation to be an interesting study of author development and maturation.

I disagree with other reviewers who found the material a re-hash of the initial work by Winterhalder. The book provides a fascinating situation for writers and readers to see the blossoming of an author with Mana which was not well developed in his first attempt.

Many Topics are written about by multiple authors. The Assimilation should be read in the same spirit. His teaming up with de Clerq has inspired a brilliant new product which is a fabulous read for many, many reasons.
