She was a lady. But he was no gentleman....
With her trademark sensuality and dazzling storytelling, Julia London brings us the Rogues of Regent Street, three dashing, aristocratic gentlemen whose scandalous exploits are the talk of the ton. Adrian Spence, Earl of Albright, has earned his notoriety on the dueling field, and in the finest drawing rooms--and boudoirs--of England. This is his story....
It was strictly business as Adrian Spence claimed the woman his brother desired. A hasty wedding, and Lilliana Dashell was his--sweet revenge on the father who disinherited him and the brother who let it happen. Their wedding night is a revelation as passionate, innocent Lilliana ignites fires Adrian tries desperately to deny. By day he is a stranger. By night he is the lover of her dreams, and she a shameless wanton in his arms. But Adrian is determined that no woman will ever possess him. And Lilliana knows that her only hope of taming this very dangerous gentleman is to unlock his deepest mysteries and open his shuttered heart to love.... One more book with a promising start and disappointing ending | Customer Rating: | This was one more book with a promising beginning where we could watch the hero and heroine slowly and reluctantly fall in love. However, it wasn't so. Lilliana was wonderful - caring, patient, determined. However, Adrian was one annoying, stubborn idiot. No matter what Lilliana did, he never trusted her and preferred to believe his brother, who already betrayed him. Except for the time when he was blind, he was totally unlikable. That and Lilliana are the reasons I gave this book three stars. This was the first London's book I read and it is probably also the last. | So good! | Customer Rating: | I have always been reluctant to try reading new authors because they usually leave me feeling disappointed and I never finish the books. This is not true Julia London, she keeps the reader interested for the entire book. I had run out of books to read and Amazon recommended this to me, so I figured that I would try it after reading a sample chapter. This book is wonderful, if you like the writing styles of Judith McNaught or Jude Devereux you will also like Julia London.
The book starts out with three men, the Rogues of Regent Street. Adrian, Julian and Arthur are all that a woman would look for in a Rogue. Rakes to the core, but with good hearts, each man is haunted by the death of their friend Phillip.
"Know ye, in his death, the quality of mercy." When Adrian hears these words at Phillip's funeral he realizes that he has not gotten mercy in his own life from any of his family members. Cast off from his wealthy family because of his mothers infidelity he marries a country girl, Lilliana, for revenge against his father and brother. He soon finds out that by marrying for revenge he is getting a lot more than he bargains for. Meanwhile, Lilliana is trying to make herself noticed by her husband while not seeming like a country bumpkin. With all of her futile attempts to make Adrian take note of her just make Adrian more and more angry. Unfortunately distrust in the relationship could soon bring it to an end. They must both heal old wounds and learn the quality of the mercy within their own souls.
I loved this book from the start. London creates strong characters that have human emotions, human faults, and human doubts. The storyline keeps you turning page after page, I couldn't put the book down. You must discover what other readers are just finding out, Julia London is going to have many more books to come, and I can bet they will all be wonderful!! | It could have been a 5 | Customer Rating: | It could have been a 5 star review. Julia London's writing is phenomenal and I really fell into these characters. I watched them develop and sat on the edge of my seat until it became repetitive and found myself rolling my eyes at Adrian. In the beginning of the book I hated both characters. Him for his deceit and indifference towards his wife. Her for her naivete. But as she strove to make him really 'see' her, I was thoroughly entertained. When she basically saves his life, I thought this would be a refreshing end. But again he goes back and back to the same hurtful verbal abuse and distrust and I honestly had a tough time forgiving him. In the end, just like Lilliana, I did. (I'm a sucker).
Its a good read. I honestly have to say, I dont need to love the characters the entire time to give a book a recommendation, but I do have to love the writing and the story. I finished it in one day. Stayed up late into the night - so thats gotta count for something. Had there been one less time of him lashing out, it may have made it to 5. | Tediously Dull | Customer Rating: | | Sorry as an avid romance reader I must say I hate books that I have to force my self to finish, Because I actually finished this book is the only reason I am even giving it 2 stars. As another reviewer said the bickering gets old the same old argument for at least %75 of the book, and a dull one at that, however I am a stickler of reading an entire series and so I have learned the the 2nd book is marginally better, only buy this book if you truly feel like boring your self to sleep. | For fans of Mary Jo Putney and Julia Quinn. | Customer Rating: | Oh, the anguish of this wounded hero Adrian Spence, Earl of Albright! He shockingly kills a suicidal friend in a terrible duel; an event that plunges him into deep, inconsolable grief. His hateful, harsh father disowns him, his younger brother Benedict gloats at inheriting all that is rightly Adrian's ... and Adrian lashes out by marrying Lilliana Dashell - a lovely country lass expected to marry Benedict. Lilliana has been secretly smitten with Adrian for years, so at first she's thrilled. But Adrian, despite being a satisfying lover, guards his emotions fiercely. Little by little, Lilliana despairs she will ever touch his heart. Dangerous seeds of doubt are sown, aided by Benedict still slinking around, and Adrian's own cool remoteness. Then a dreadful accident occurs, and Adrian's life is plunged into further terrifying disarray. I was in tears as this tortured man struggled to shoulder his immense panic at the possibility of losing Lilliana: He had been heartless, indifferent, absorbed with obsessions and blind to everything around him. Heart blind... Adrian and Lilliana's stormy, breathtaking romance is a stunning keeper, to savour with laughter and tears. |
