The Great Answer Book | Customer Rating: | I have just started knitting and I have tried so many reference books to learn. This book though, I keep in my project bag. You never know when you are going to forget how to do something. Or when there isn't a stitch definition with the pattern you're working on.
This book has everything for a beginner or anyone else needing a quick reminder. I haven't found another book with this much info in one spot. And it is the right size to slip into your bag.
I would recommend this to anyone interested in knitting.
I also love and own "The Crochet Answer Book". | Portable but needs better indexing | Customer Rating: | | This is a very compact book, handy for your knitting bag, and I admit to using it at least once a week. The problem with it is that the index is very weak. For example, I had instructions saying "KFB". That is not in the index -- once I'd googled it I found that that is an increase, so I looked under "increase" and managed to find an entry. I have amended my index to have a cross-reference (I guess I should admit I'm also a librarian, to whom such things matter). I also would like to see better drawings in it -- something like you find in Stitch and Bitch. Despite all this, I use it fairly often and it usually manages to answer my questions, after I've found where the editors decided to put the answers. | NOT PRACTICAL | Customer Rating: | | I bought this book and what a mistake! I gave it 2 stars, but really would like to give it none. The only reason I gave it 2 was because a lot of people (given the previous reviews) seem to find it useful. The most useful thing I have learned from this book is to never buy a knitting book without using it first (from the library or a friend). Take a technique you would like to learn and see if the book describes it in a way you can understand. VOGUE KNITTING IS FAIRLY GOOD, but for a large reference, the best I have found so far is THE ULTIMATE KNITTERS BIBLE. The pictures are large and I can actually go from the book to utilizing the instructions in a real project. Each time I have a question I look at all of my reference books. I have never found The Knitting Answer Book understandable. P.S. I have a graduate degree and don't consider myself to be stupid. | Good Content Mostly - Index Difficult! | Customer Rating: | | Most of what is contained in this book is very useful, but the index is non-intuitive and I find it very hard to find what I'm looking for when I'm looking up something specific. The book's content is organized in a way that does make sense overall, but the index is missing lots of key words to match up to sections that one might try to find. I find it great to browse through when I'm looking for nothing in particular, but when I reach a point where I need to figure out something in a knitting pattern or technique . .well more often than not, I can't find it in the index, but DO eventually find it in the book. I've actually resorted to writing in my own notes in the index to help me remember where to find things I might look up more than once. | The best quick answer book EVER | Customer Rating: | | This book is awesome, it has basic - medium info on everything, I can't tell you how many times I'll forget just how to do something small that I'm RIGHT in the middle of and I can just flip and find the answer in this book and continue. The instructions are easy to understand and follow and the size of the book makes it PERFECT to fit in a bag already stuffed with knitting stuff! This is the must have book for anyone who knits. |
