Unbelievably funny | Customer Rating: | This is without a doubt the funniest book I have ever read, and one of the funniest...THINGS I've ever checked out. There is a joke in every sentence, sometimes 2 or 5 jokes. It's consistently laugh out loud hilarious. I look forward to reading it on the train ride home all day at work. Can't wait to check out the others! It really is like seeing a classic Simpsons episode in your head.
Personal favorite part is when he forces open the jaw of a woman named Cola to look at her teeth, in order to see how old she is (which is of no relevance in any case.)
-Jordan | Swartzwelder! | Customer Rating: | As with others I heard about this from the Simpsons commentary. Chances are if you bought this, you did the same, thus you will like the book. Thus I don't need to say much about it because it is full of pure Swartzweldian humour in book form.
It's stupid, it's silly, and it can be read in a single sitting. There isn't much more too it. | Laugh Out Loud Literature | Customer Rating: | | After hearing of John's books through the Simpsons dvd sets I decided to order them up, I couldn't of been more pleased with the books. Easy quick reads and absolutley hilarious. If your a simpsons fan or just a fan of quirky humor buy it. I've never read something that made me laugh out loud or quote lines to my friends and family more often. | Enjoyable Read | Customer Rating: | This is a very demanding and thought provoking read you'll want to quote from for years to come. Actually, not really. It's more like a Simpsons episode, with an original character, set in book form. It's loaded with zany humor, often involving what the Simpsons crew has dubbed "flexible reality" and other cartoon-like flights from logic. That's a good thing if you're a Simpsons fan.
I'm giving this book four stars because, although it's a fun read, Swartzwelder's writing style can sometimes become tiresome. Nevertheless, I highly recommend it for hardcore Simpsons fans. This won't be the last Swartzwelder book I purchase. | Amusing and at times ridiculously hysterical | Customer Rating: | "[I jumped out the booby-trapped car.] I was going over sixty at the time, but luckily I didn't hit the ground. There was a cliff there and I just went harmlessly over that. But just when you're sailing along, thinking everything is going to be okay, something unexpected comes along to jar you out of your complacency. For me, in this case, it was the bottom of the cliff."
I, like other reviewers, first heard of this book via the audio commentary on the Simpsons dvd's. Being a fan of Swartzwelder's writing on the Simpsons, I gave this a shot. It' s a very short read. This works to its advantage, though, since alot of the early manic energy starts to peter out when Swartzwelder starts focusing more on exposition than narrative. That being said, it's been a *long* time since I physically laughed out loud to tearful hysterics while reading (I believe the last book I did that with was almost more than a decade ago with the Dilbert Principle), and there are plenty of moments when I had to set the book down, grab a tissue and struggle to wipe my eyes, which would be busy shooting out salty streams of joy. Or put another way - I generally like to read when I'm taking the bus to work or some such, but while reading this, I refrained, as I'm sure that my maniacal laughter every few minutes would have disturbed the other passengers.
There is a caveat - Swartzwelder has a very specific style of humor. I would best decribe it as nonchalant absurdism. From the quote I provide and from the quotes other reviewers provide, hopefully you can tell if this is the style of humor you would enjoy. If it is, though, you should immediately purchase this book. |
