The idea that there must be something to the Vampire mythology that exists throughout history in pretty much all cultures in one form or another is thought provoking, and Knight takes that theme and unravels it in a post-apocalyptic scenario. Solid job at blending action with character development. Good research and description on locations, and technical extrapolations from an apparently well rounded knowledge of weapons, military workings and social mechanisms. Overall good read. And, Knight also does a surprisingly good job of keeping it interesting through the entire series.

I didn't know what to thing when I first started the book. I was thinking vampires in the classic sense. Once I got my mind around the fact that they are more like alien invaders, I could get into the book.

Basically the vampires invaded our society then committed an all out war. Most of the population was destroyed and the world had been changed to better suit their needs. What humans were left were divided into one their own, the resistance, or working for the vampires in one way or another.

Here enters Valentine. He is a teenager that decides he wants to follow in his fathers footsteps and fight the vampires. The rest of the story is is wanderings and battles.

I didn't like how there was too much detail on so many things. It really drags the story down. Also, there is not much of a story beyond his wanderings and different battles.

Don't get me wrong. It was still a good book. But remember it is the first in the series.

Vampire aliens sucked the life out of this book...

Every once in a while you come across a book that you just couldn't care less about. Way of the Wolf is just such a book. The premise is interesting and the combination of a post-apocalyptic world ruled by vampire aliens seemed like it would be full of action and interesting scenes. What you are left with is a pile of words and nothing to compel you to read on.

Right from the beginning you can see Knight's inability to write well. All his characters are one dimensional with no development at all. Valentine (whose name itself is unruly and cumbersome to keep reading about all the time) moves through the chapters performing certain actions. None of the actions are ever important enough to draw the reader in and become involved. His "best" friend as a recruit dies and not only does the reader not care but Valentine sees it, dismisses it, does some revenge killing and then it is done, move on to the next supporting character.

We see Valentine given credence not through his actions but because Knight says so. For example, as a recruit he is suddenly put in a position of officer as a sergeant says "we are going to do what's called a battlefield promotion, where we will promote you to officer" (or something like that). Not only did we not see or read anything that showed why Valentine was chosen for anything other than he was in the rear of the group, but Knight's inability to write the story believably is the ultimate killer of this book.

If the reader can't become involved or feel emotions towards the characters, than why would anyone continue to read? Knight never once described anything in any detail that made me imagine the world Valentine lives in, or to feel what he was going through. Instead we are told what is happening, where they were and how we should feel. I would not recommend this author to anyone. Maybe this was his first book and his writing will improve, but if he is missing the foundation of a good writer than I would not hold my breath that his books will improve over time.

1 star.

Good book

The novel "The Way of the Wolf" is the first in a series of books by the author E.E. Knight. It follows the military career of the character David Valentine in a post-apocalyptic world run by a race of vampires.
This book was really good. There were always twist and turns in the plot that keep you guessing. Those you thought to be evil were often good. Also, E.E. Knight used incredible visualization skills to bring the book to life. He wrote a few paragraphs at the beginning of every chapter to put the setting into focus.
The only problem I found with the story is the time differences between chapters. Years would often pass between chapters, and so a lot of possibilities to clarify things about the story were lost. I really don't care for this type of writing, because it can be very confusing. Other than that, there's not really much to complain about.
This book is written for mature audiences. There is a quite a bit of blood, so avoid this series if you're squeamish. There's also a lot of swearing, so it's not really appropriate for younger people.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading "The Way of the Wolf". It really brought up some interesting points about the future and what, though however unlikely it may be, it may be like.

This book left me with many mixed emotions. The episodic nature of the chapters made the narative seem fragmented and would completely take me out of the story. I love the concept but the execution was too off-kilter for me to say that I actually enjoyed the book. I am seriously debating whether to try another in the series to see if the clumsiness of "Way of the Wolf" is due to it being a debut novel or if the style is just that way. Definitely borrow this book before you buy it. (or get a cheap used copy)
